JBU Announces 2005-06 Tuition Rates

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 8, 2005) - The John Brown University Board of Trustees and the President’s Cabinet recently approved an increase of 5.83 percent for tuition, fees, room and board for the 2005-2006 academic year. The administration worked diligently to keep the increase as low as possible while still meeting the needs of the university budget. Before proposing the tuition increase, university officials meet with academic divisions, administrative offices, and Student Government Association representatives to discuss the increase and concerns of the campus community. “I am convinced that JBU continues to be a great value,” said President Charles Pollard. “We consistently offer a top-quality, Christ-centered education at a very competitive price in comparison to other private Christian universities. We are able to offer this value because of the generosity of others who have given to the university. We recognize that students and their families make sacrifices to invest in a JBU education, and we are committed to partner with those families through our generous financial aid program to continue to keep JBU affordable.” The costs for 2005-2006 tuition, fees, room and board break down as follows:

  Percentage Dollar   Total Cost
Tuition 5.97% $820   $14,544
Fees 3.66% $26   $736
Room and Board 5.75% $306   $5,630
Total 5.83% $1,152   $20,910

Approximately 45 percent of the total increase in net revenues will go toward salary and benefit increases for faculty and staff. The remainder of the net revenue covers the cost increase that is necessary to maintain the current levels of quality and service such as: instructional costs, technology costs, utilities, service contracts, supplies and equipment. Last year, tuition, fees, room and board increased by 5.31 percent. The total cost for the 2003-2004 academic year was $19,758. John Brown University is a private Christian university, ranked eighth by U.S. News & World Report in the Southern Region. JBU enrolls more than 1,900 students from 43 states and 40 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
