JBU Students Leave for Spain

Siloam Springs, Ark (May 21, 2001) - From June 10 through July 7, ten students enrolled in John Brown University’s Communication Division will be helping the Gospel Missionary Union (GMU) develop broadcast material for its growing satellite television ministry in North Africa and the Middle East.

GMU’s Media Center is headquartered in Malaga, Spain, and serves as the base from which the international missionary organization operates its worldwide media activities. The Malaga Media Center (MMC) has a strong and well-established radio program, with literature distribution, follow-up and summer Bible schools. Today at MMC, GMU’s missionaries prepare Bible training materials that suitable to the region in which they will be televised. JBU students will provide experience in animation and video production to help GMU meet the growing demands for quality materials. Also the student team will help launch the mission organization’s newly constructed television studio.

In Muslim countries, where it remains illegal for Christians to meet openly or to share their faith personally, satellite television and the Internet are opening up tremendous opportunities for evangelism in a part of the world once virtually closed to Christian ministry. Currently there are 900 million Muslims in the world, yet only 0.05% of total funding for missions by all Christian organizations is being spent to introduce Christianity to followers of Islam. Today, 75% of North Africans have satellite televisions whereas only 35% have telephones.

“We see this as an excellent opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in a start-up operation and develop materials to be broadcast. Each member of the team brings special skills to the project, and I believe by the middle of July, GMU will be equipped with quality material to broadcast. Our students will return to campus with a rare and valuable experience,” says David Muessemeyer, Instructor of Digital Media.

Two JBU faculty members and their families will travel with the students to Malaga, Spain for the three-week mission trip. Though the team still lacks $5,000 of its goal of $30,338, team members are hopeful that the required funds will arrive by June 10.
