Community Service: Integral Part of JBU Student Orientation

Siloam Springs, Ark (August 15, 2001) - Saturday, August 18, 350-450 John Brown University students will invade Siloam Springs wielding shovels, paint brushes, ladders and lots of energy. The Seventh Annual Day of Caring puts students to work on projects benefiting the city and its residents. It also provides the opportunity for students to work together and contribute to the community in which they live, work and study. The Day of Caring is part of the fall semester student orientation on the JBU campus and helps students become involved in the Siloam Springs community.

Becci Rothfuss, Associate Dean of Students says, “The Day of Caring is a special part of our fall orientation. The Siloam Springs community for this event is incredible. This year approximately 350-450 JBU participants, including new and returning students, faculty and staff will participate. Although we designed this event for new students more and more returning students, faculty and staff want to be involved.”

Working closely with the Director of Parks and Recreation and multiple non-profit organizations, Rothfuss has coordinated projects students are able to start and complete in one afternoon. These projects include painting, planting, completing minor repairs and construction in the parks and downtown areas of Siloam. In addition, student groups work closely helping elderly individuals around the area whose place of residence may need minor repairs, painting or cleaning

This year’s Day of Caring project sites throughout the Siloam Springs area include: Head Start Program, Siloam Springs Middle School, New Life Ranch, the Manna Center, New Beginnings Pregnancy Center, Downtown Main Street, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Koala Park, Siloam Springs Museum, and Heritage Heights just to name a few.

This event begins with a kick off at 1:45 p.m. at the “quad” on the JBU campus. Photo ops are available throughout the afternoon at the various locations throughout Siloam Springs. For a complete list of locations call Adriane Carr at 479-524-7212.
