Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 22, 2004) - John Brown University will break ground on the new business center today at 10:30 a.m. just northeast of the Cathedral of the Ozarks. The business center, which received full funding in early January, will house the business division, as well as the Soderquist Center for Leadership and Ethics. A total of $11.9 million in funding was raised in record time because of the urgent need to construct two facilities, a residence hall and business center. The campaign kicked off in early 2003 and officially ended when JBU met the J. E. and L. E. Mabee Foundation’s $1.75 million challenge grant in early January. Of the $11.9 million raised for the two buildings, $6.2 million will be used for the business center. On the first floor, the undergraduate and graduate business division will occupy the full 17,800 square feet with 15 offices, a conference room, and classrooms. Each of the four classrooms will be fully equipped with the latest teaching technology available. One classroom will be a computer lab dedicated to business students. The second floor will be occupied by the Soderquist Center for Leadership and Ethics. The 17,800 square-foot space provides an attractive, professional location for the programs and staff of the Center, who are presently working out of two private residences off-campus. The Soderquist Center will have 10 offices in addition to several meeting and conference rooms that will be equipped with the latest technology. “It is important that these two programs be in constant interaction in the same building because they support each other in many ways,” Dr. Lee Balzer, president of JBU said. “The Soderquist Center serves business leaders from some of the top corporations and charitable organizations in the nation, while JBU undergraduate and graduate students prepare for a future in business and leadership.” John Brown University is a top-tier private university, ranked 11th by U.S. News & World Report in the Southern Region. JBU enrolls more than 1,800 students from 42 states and 42 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
