Tuition Increase Lowest in Sixteen Years

Siloam Springs, Ark (February 7, 2002) - The John Brown University Board of Trustees has approved a 4.76% increase for 2002-2003 tuition, room, board and fees, the lowest percentage increase since 1987. Part of this accepted proposal is a tuition increase of 4.8%, the lowest percentage increase for tuition in more than 20 years.

“I’m pleased that the Board of Trustees has approved the lowest percentage tuition increase in many years,” JBU President Lee Balzer said. “This will keep JBU in the lowest third of our comparison group and help us to remain one of the very best values available today in Christian higher education.”

The proposal was recommended to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees by President Balzer, who said that he and his cabinet were particularly concerned about keeping costs down for next year in light of unstable economic conditions, recent cuts in statewide scholarship funding and the currently low rate of inflation.

“This encouraging news about low cost increases is a reminder of the value of a John Brown University education,” said Jim Krall, Vice President for University Advancement. “The new 102, 000 square foot Pat and Willard Walker Student Center, the new science building under construction and the student opportunities from the Soderquist Center for Leadership and Ethics and the Center for Marriage and Family Studies, along with innovative majors such as digital media make JBU very reasonable for the high quality private Christian education each graduate receives. With this year’s low cost increases, a JBU education continues to be a worthwhile investment that is sure to yield excellent returns in each graduate’s life.”

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of over 1,600 students from 45 states and 33 countries. JBU is a member of the Arkansas Independent Colleges and Universities as well as the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
