JBU Drops First Round Game in Conference Tournament

Siloam Springs, Ark. (March 12, 2004) - Abdiel Mendieta’s game leading 23 points was not enough for JBU as the Golden Eagles suffered a 75-70 loss to Wayland Baptist University in the first round of the Carl’s Jr. Sooner Athletic Conference tournament on Friday night in Oklahoma City. JBU played sluggish in the first half and fell behind 36-30 at the intermission.

With 5:10 remaining in the game, the Golden Eagles had fought back to within 1 point at 53-52 but were never able to take the lead. Two quick steals by the Pioneer’s Nate Bridges resulting in 4 of his 20 points put Wayland Baptist back up 61-55 with 3:15 left in the game. Bridges scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half keeping JBU struggling to get back in the game. Mykolas Jasaitis, with 14 first half points, also scored 20 points for the winning Pioneers.

Brandon Cole tossed in 15 points in the second half for JBU to go with his 3 in the first period to end the night with 18. However, Wayland Baptist was able to capitalize on the 19 turnovers by JBU and score 24 points off those miscues to offset the scoring punch of Mendieta and Cole.

JBU will now have to wait until midweek next week to know if they will be selected as an at-large team for the NAIA National Tournament to be held in Kansas City March 24-30.
