Is Entrepreneurship & Innovation for Me?

What Is Entrepreneurship & Innovation?

If you think the only benefit to being an entrepreneur is making your own rules, think again. An entrepreneur is fast-paced, strategic, innovative, risky, smart, creative, and passionate. Entrepreneurs have the opportunity to dream up millions of ways to impact the world.

All businesses begin with an entrepreneur. Have you ever heard of Apple, Disney, or Microsoft? These companies wouldn’t exist without entrepreneurs who took big risks. An entrepreneur is a self-motivated, tenacious leader who works hard to build businesses from idea generation to market validation and onward. Entrepreneurs understand the risks associated with innovation and are prepared to fail. Upon failure, entrepreneurs rise to the occasion and continue pushing forth, searching for success. Their resilience and unwavering faith to see their business succeed is a necessity for the business environment.

Why Major in Entrepreneurship & Innovation?

It’s marketable. In an economic era of increasing volatility and complexity, employers are looking for employees who are innovative and quick thinkers. Eighty percent of the S&P 500 cite innovation (or a close derivative) as a corporate value—occurring more frequently than integrity.

It’s exciting. For an Entrepreneur, no two days look alike. The game is always changing and you have to be ready to change with it. Launching into new industries, without assurance of the result, is exciting and adventurous.

It builds character. Character cannot be taught; it grows as a result of experiences. Entrepreneurs often face the harsh ramifications of risky decisions, venturing out into new waters, and sometimes failing in their start-ups. Despite these common “setbacks,” entrepreneurs also experience the joys of taking chances, discovering new things, and creating multi-million dollar ventures. All of these adventures build character.
