Visual Art Facilities Technician

Position summary
The Facilities Technician supports the daily operations of the Visual Art Department by maintaining shared studio and lab facilities, coordinating department printing, purchasing and managing supplies, overseeing environmental health and safety compliance, and assisting with equipment maintenance and repair. This position serves as a central point of contact for both analog and digital production spaces and works closely with faculty, staff, and students to support instruction, scholarship, and creative practice across multiple majors.

Position responsibilities
- Department Printing & Production Support
- Serve as the primary point person for department-wide printing operations.
- Troubleshoot printer issues, coordinate maintenance and repairs, and liaise with vendors and/or campus IT.
- Monitor printer usage, manage consumables, and ensure reliable access to printing resources for faculty and students.
- Studio & Lab Supply Purchasing
- Purchase, track, and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for multiple specialized facilities, including but not limited to:
- Printmaking and Screen-printing lab
- Darkroom and Photography Studio
- Soundstage
- Film and Photography Gear Lab
- Woodshop
- Ceramics and Sculpture areas
- 3D printing and Digital Fabrication facilities
- Work with faculty and staff to anticipate instructional, research, and project needs.
- Manage vendor relationships for purchasing and repair while following University procurement policies and budgetary guidelines.
- Purchase, track, and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for multiple specialized facilities, including but not limited to:
- Environmental Health & Safety (GHS/EHS)
- Coordinate compliance with University Chemical Hygiene Officer, State, and Federal guidelines related to hazardous materials, processes, and equipment used in studios and labs.
- Manage GHS documentation, labeling, storage, and disposal procedures for chemicals and materials used in printmaking, photography, ceramics, screen printing, and 3D printing.
- Coordinate with Chemical Hygiene Officer and Campus Safety Office and assist with inspections, training, and reporting as needed.
- Equipment Coordination & Maintenance
- Assist with organizing, tracking, and facilitating repairs for Photography, Film, and other departmental equipment as necessary.
- Support basic operation, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of equipment, escalating complex issues as appropriate.
- Coordinate with vendors, repair services, and internal University departments.
- Maintain equipment inventories, usage records, and service histories.
- General Facilities Support
- Assist with the organization, cleanliness, and functionality of shared studio and lab spaces.
- Identify facilities or infrastructure issues and coordinate repairs with campus facilities services or IT.
- Support department events, installations, exhibitions, or special projects as needed.
Essential skills and experience
- Experience working in an associated field or environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with purchasing, inventory management, and vendor coordination.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, environmental health and safety practices related to art studios and digital fabrication spaces.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse academic environment.
Preferred skills and experience
- Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, Woodworking, Screen-printing, or 3D printing.
- Experience working in higher education or an arts-focused institutional setting.
- Familiarity with GHS/EHS compliance, documentation, and training.
Education
Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience required. Bachelor's Degree in Visual Art, Studio Arts, Digital Fabrication, or a related field preferred.

- Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Working in studio, shop, and lab environments that may involve noise, dust, chemicals, or fumes, with appropriate safety measures in place.
