Nurse Practitioner Tracks

Contingent upon accreditation, the Family Nurse Practitioner and Nurse-Midwifery programs are planned to launch in 2028, followed by the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program in 2029.

First-in-region PA

Contingent upon accreditation, the residential PA program would be the first of its kind in Northwest Arkansas.

This program has a planned launch in 2030

Proven Success

The expansion builds on JBU’s existing BSN program, which retains over 70% of its graduates within the Northwest Arkansas region.

Addressing critical needs in Northwest Arkansas

Why graduate healthcare? Arkansas faces major shortages in primary care, maternal health, and behavioral health. Through new physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs, JBU aims to help prepare more advanced practice healthcare providers to serve communities across the state.

Workforce shortage

Arkansas currently ranks 46th nationally in physicians per capita, with 68% of counties designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas.

PA Demand

The state is projected to meet only 48% of its Physician Assistant workforce needs by 2026.

Specialized Care

New programs will address critical health care needs in Arkansas, including the state’s high infant mortality rate, the severe shortage of behavioral health prescribers (with only 29.7% of needs currently met), and the growing need for primary health care.

Frequently asked questions

When will JBU planning to launch the new healthcare graduate programs?

JBU is currently pursuing accreditation for these new programs through the appropriate accrediting bodies and plans to launch the programs over three years. The fully online Family Nurse Practitioner and Nurse-Midwifery tracks are expected to begin in 2028, followed by the online Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner track in 2029. The residential Physician Assistant program is slated to welcome its first cohort in 2030.

How is the expansion being funded?

The new programs are supported by a $34.5 million gift commitment from a generous partner. As part of its Steadfast Faith capital campaign, JBU has also raised $7.7 million from generous donors and is committed to raising an additional $6.5 million, bringing the total project investment to $48.7 million.

What facilities and resources will support the new programs?

The investment includes funding to complete a 7,500-square-foot expansion of JBU’s Health & Technology Center, which will provide state-of-the-art labs and classroom space for advanced healthcare education. Contingent on accreditation, the project also includes a $15 million faculty endowment to help ensure market-competitive compensation and a $10 million scholarship endowment to keep the programs accessible to students committed to practicing in Arkansas.

Who will JBU partner with for clinical training?

To support clinical requirements for the new programs, JBU will work with regional healthcare partners including Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas, Washington Regional Medical Center, Freeman Health Systems and Community Clinic. These partnerships will help develop high-quality local rotations while growing clinical capacity in coordination with regional providers to benefit the Northwest Arkansas community.
