Art Scholarship

We Offer $150,000 in Art Scholarships Per Year

The JBU Department of Visual Arts awards $150,000 in scholarships each year. The scholarships are designated for new freshman students and transfers who are majoring in Art & Illustration, Digital Cinema, Graphic Design or Photography and are renewable for up to 4 years.

The application process, including online portfolio submission, is open from October 25–November 8 each fall and February 1–14 each spring.

Scholarships will be awarded based upon a portfolio review, faculty recommendation, academic standing and personal character. Some scholarships will be based on a student's portfolio and financial need.  These requirements will be evaluated based on existing applicant records on file at John Brown University.

We need your application and a copy of your portfolio returned to us to be eligible for the following fall semester or spring semester. We want to see what you consider to be your best work. This can be in whatever medium you have been working: painting, drawing, design, computer graphics, web or whatever.

Since the inception of this program we have seen a large number of talented students develop their abilities and begin successful careers. Many of our graduates let us know that they developed much more than their artistic abilities. We see students that are prepared for life in a highly respected academic environment. Many also let us know that they were drawn closer to God because of the spiritual life here at JBU. So we are thankful to the donors that have provided these scholarships that will enable more students to be a part of JBU. Now we encourage you to consider this scholarship and contact us with any questions.

Please fill out a Scholarship Application and create a digital portfolio. It is helpful to submit your application NO LATER than noon on the date of the deadline so that we may send you the link to upload your work NO LATER than midnight.

Your portfolio must be submitted digitally. If the work was not created digitally, then you should either photograph or scan it. You may submit a maximum of 12 images. Please save images in the JPEG format, each with a maximum file size of 10 Mb.

If you wish to submit video work, you may submit up to five video files, each with a maximum file size of 100 MB. Or a great alternative for larger work is to upload your work to Vimeo and send us the link.

Please name each uploaded file with your first initial followed by a period and your last name and then a sequential number. (Example: K.Smith8.jpeg, K.Smith9.jpeg, K.Smith10.jpeg and so on). If you wish, you may attach a separate document that lists the type of media used, size of art, date of completion, and if it is an abstract piece, which side is up!

Within 48 hours of receiving your application we will email you a link to upload your portfolio. If you do not receive an email, or have filled out the PDF application, please contact us so we can send/re-send an upload link.
