Walton International Scholars Program

Founded in 1985 by Sam and Helen Walton, the Walton International Scholarship Program (WISP) provides free college education for the brightest and most capable students from Central America and Mexico. Through a competitive application process, the Walton Program selects students from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama.

After studying in a democratic environment and being exposed to the principles of free enterprise in action, students are required to return to their home countries and use their degrees for the benefit of their home countries. The goal of the Walton Scholarship is to provide the leadership necessary to strengthen democracy and promote capitalism through free-market enterprise throughout Mexico and Central America.

The Walton Program is a resounding success. More than 1,500 students have completed bachelor's degrees and returned home, where the value of an American education is unmistakable. The impact of these students on their home countries has been tremendous.
