After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Rebecca earned her law degree from Baylor University in 1993. Rebecca worked in private law practice in Fayetteville, Arkansas, before joining the Wal-Mart Legal Team in 1995. As Corporate Counsel at Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Rebecca advised business clients on various legal issues related to operations, supply chain, merchandising and marketing with considerable emphasis on governmental compliance and contract law. She also managed general liability litigation nationally and presented high exposure cases to senior management. After leaving Wal-Mart, Rebecca co-founded, built and managed a real estate development and investment firm in Northwest Arkansas where she also served as in-house counsel. Her legal practice involved advising internal business clients on matters relating to real estate development, construction and management as well as handling corporate formation and compliance matters.

Throughout her legal and business career, Rebecca also enjoyed teaching part-time in both graduate and undergraduate programs at John Brown University, the University of Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas Community College. In 2011, Rebecca completed a master's of science in operations management at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and moved to the Midwest where she served as an Assistant Professor of Management at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Rebecca now works in Madison, Wisconsin, as a Supervising Attorney and Clinical Instructor at the University of Wisconsin Law School's Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic where she is responsible for supervising student attorneys as they provide legal services to early-stage entrepreneurs.

Rebecca is licensed to practice law in Texas, Arkansas, Iowa and Wisconsin and is an advocate for the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics.

As an adjunct instructor for the last 17 years, Rebecca Burkes' goal has been to provide as much useful information as possible to help students become better decision-makers, managers and citizens.  She teaches the necessary principles and jargon that help the students understand the subject matter, but she also incorporates many real-world examples that help the students better understand the concepts.  She has discovered over the years that students learn best through these real-world examples; therefore, she draws from her extensive business and legal experiences to make the information more interesting and relevant.

Ms. Burkes enjoys teaching for JBU because of its approach to business education from the perspective of the head, heart and hand.  This allows her to give students the big picture of a subject but also integrate faithful teachings into the lessons.
