Computer Labs

We know that technology is an important part of your lives, so JBU has many computer labs around campus and in each residence hall for your convenience.

Technology FAQs

What type of computer will I need to bring to campus?

You may want to wait to decide what kind of computer to buy until you have been on campus for a little while. The answer may vary depending on your major. If you are in a major that uses computers a lot, you may want to speak to your instructors to see if they recommend a certain type of computer.

What can I do if I don't want to purchase my own computer?

JBU has computer labs across campus and in all residence halls for student use. We have a computer lab in the Soderquist Business Center, and all on-campus residence halls. We have specialized labs in the Wingate Art buildings and the Balzer Technology Center, fully equipped with the latest design software for projects. All of these labs have printers that easily allow students to print from their student printing account. Students may also use the computers and printers in the JBU Media Lab, a student-orientated project work space.

Do I need to bring a printer?

No, all of the computer labs, dorm labs, and the Media Lab are equipped with printers for your use. Please do not bring wireless printers, as they will interfere with the campus network.

How do I get connected to the Internet?

JBU provides wireless internet access in all residence halls and buildings across campus, as well as wired ports in residence hall rooms.

Can I set up a wireless router/access point?

No. Please leave wireless access points at home. We provide wireless access in the residence halls as well as wired ports in all of the rooms. Wireless access points can interfere with JBU's network equipment.

What about anti-virus software?

It is highly recommended that you install up-to-date antivirus software. For Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers, it is already on your machine in the form of Windows Defender. If you have questions, please call our Help Desk at 479 524 7256.

Do I need a firewall?

JBU operates an Internet firewall that provides security from most Internet attacks. There is little we can do to protect your computer from other residents. We encourage you to use the firewall that comes with your operating system.

What do I need to know about email safety?

Phishing is an email attempt to gain personal information such as usernames, passwords, social security numbers, and other sensitive information by pretending to be a credible source like a bank or an IT department. While our spam filter will catch the majority of such messages, sometimes, they get through. Here's how to protect yourself:

NEVER give out your password or other personal information over email or phone, not even to an IT person. Our ITS department will never ask for this information

FORWARD the email to the JBU Help Desk if you are not sure.

DELETE emails that look suspicious.

For additional information about safe computing practices and JBU standards, please see the Acceptable Use Policy (for students and employees of JBU only, sign-on is required).
