Cap Decorating Guidelines

Graduates are allowed to decorate the top of their mortarboard as long as they abide by the following guidelines:

  • Messages should be positive and celebratory in nature and following community covenant guidelines.
  • Messaging may not be divisive in nature.
  • Only the flat, top area may be decorated. Nothing may hang down from any side of the cap (other than your tassel).
  • Decorations must not be taller than 1” from the cap so as not to obstruct the view of others.

JBU reserves the right to pull any cap we find does not meet these guidelines during graduate check-in before the ceremony and provide a non-decorated replacement. Students are required to wear a cap to participate.

If you have questions about a proposed decorating idea or wording, please email
