John Brown University has inspired me to reach for ALL my dreams…..

Keri OwensJohn Brown University. The name alone speaks for itself. The original founder, John Brown, was extremely driven and motivated by his goal. That’s where we get the "Head, Heart, Hand" motto. He wanted people to focus on all of it, not just one.

It took me awhile to get to JBU, but I knew from the very beginning it was going to be home for me. I met with Kent Shaffer with only 30 credits hours and was completely sure JBU’s Degree Completion Program was where I wanted to be. I remember the first night, about six months ago, when I logged onto JBU’s Eaglenet for the first time to register for classes. Tears streamed down my face; if you would have told me six years ago that I, being a single mom with only a high school diploma, would be at JBU, I would have definitely laughed at the idea and thought that there was no way I could do that. God has definitely lit my path and His hand is very much in my life. JBU has not only showed me that I can obtain my dreams, but also brought my walk with God closer. The way they integrate Him in their curriculum is amazing and a refreshing reminder in today’s world.

I feel God has blessed me again with an additional path along with school that I can walk down. I’m very passionate about the modeling career that I’ve been trying to pursue. It’s a feeling like no other... indescribable almost. Nigel Barker, a photographer from America’s Next Top Model, put it quite eloquently: "What makes my pictures so great? There are a million pretty faces, a million expensive cameras, and a million photographers. But what makes my pictures special? I believe it’s the energy. It’s the energy the model puts out and I put out as a photographer. Ask yourself, what are these pictures for? What do you want people to feel by seeing this picture? What do you want the picture to say without you uttering a word? It’s the energy, always be aware of what energy you put out and put into everything."

I’m very aware of this. I want the energy I put out to be exceptional. So, I’m very happy to announce that about a month ago. I was one of 80 who were selected to participate in the Little Rock Fashion Week! The fashion week will be July 14-19, and will be a great experience and opportunity. The events alone look amazing, but add that all models will be competing to earn the title of Model of the Year. The winner will receive a contract, cash prize, and other prizes. This is absolutely my goal! I’m very excited to be apart of the week-long events. I give all the glory to God; His hand is definitely a part of this, like it has been in my life.

John Brown University has definitely showed me I can fulfill my dreams, all of them. Why not? You just need to have a little faith and focus on your head, heart, and hands. John Brown isn’t like any other college, accelerated program, or learning atmosphere. The staff, instructors, and administration really care if you succeed or not. It’s an experience you have to see for yourself.
