Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 8, 2004) - Junior Caitlin Chandler tossed in 10 points during a 4-minute span in the second half to lead JBU to a 72-56 Sooner Athletic Conference victory over Lubbock Christian University on Thursday evening in Siloam Springs. With the score tied at 46-46 and 8:43 to play, Chandler began her scoring assault that led to 10 unanswered points by Lubbock Christian. In an attempt to get back in the game, the Lady Chaps began to foul and committed 6 fouls in the last 3 minutes that allowed JBU to extend the lead to the final 16 point win.
With the lead changing hands 7 times in the first half, neither team was able to take control for long and the halftime score was knotted at 31. In the first 5 minutes alone, there were 5 lead changes before the Golden Eagles finally took a 4-point lead with 12:46 left in the first period. Sophomore Natalie Reed’s 2 three-pointers sparked John Brown University in the first stanza.
Four Golden Eagles players were in double figures led by freshman Ashley Wettengel’s 14 points, followed by sophomore Kendra McCormick’s 12, sophomore Alicia Baer’s 11 and Chandler’s 10. Wettengel led JBU in rebounds with 9 and freshman Jordyn West pulled down 6 to help the Golden Eagles out rebound the Lady Chaps 39-32.
“Although playing sloppily at times, I was proud of the way we played the last 8 minutes of the game an pulled away from a tie to get the large margin of victory,” said Coach Jeff Soderquist after the game. “That is a sign of a good team that can fight through adversity and execute the offense when needed”
John Brown University moves to 2-0 in SAC play and 13-2 for the season and will play Wayland Baptist University on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm to continue Sooner Athletic Conference action.
