Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 26, 2003) - The Golden Eagle men’s soccer team traveled to Northeastern Oklahoma on Wednesday and came away with a big win. Behind the play of freshman Juliao Rodrigo and the game-winning goal by freshman Joe Hirleman, the Golden Eagles were able to upset NSU with the 3-2 win. “Rodrigo’s play at midfield gave us the spark that we needed. T the rest of the team seemed to pick up the pace when he came into the game,” stated coach Bob Gustavson. Rodrigo came off the bench in the second half and provided the assist to Hirleman, which led to theGolden Eagle’s third and game-winning goal. Sophomores Kyle Carter and Shawn Wierick scored one goal each. The offensive effort combined with the steady goalkeeping play of junior Pablo Fernandez helped the Golden Eagles pick up their fifth win of the season. Fernandez had six saves and two of those saves were on breakaway shots in the second half. The win was big for JBU because NSU is ranked 22nd in NCAA Division II. The Golden Eagles move to 5-1-1 on the season, and NSU drops to 7-2.
