Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 10, 2009) - The JBU women’s basketball team opened the 2009-2010 season with an 84-51 rout of Ecclesia (Ark.) at home on Tuesday night in Murray Sells.
JBU controlled the tempo from the tip and held a 20 point, 28-8 lead midway through the first half. With 52 seconds left in the first period, the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 26, 41-15, before closing out the half ahead 21, 41-20.
In the second period, JBU continued to dismantle the EC defense and never saw their lead drop below 20 points as they closed out the game with the 33 point margin.
Junior Ashley Taylor (Bergman, Ark.) led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds after missing most of preseason nursing a broken foot. Freshman Jessica Berlin (Siloam Springs) tossed in 17 and five caroms, followed by sophomore Chelsea Garrison (Springdale, Ark.) and freshman Anna Parish (Yantis, Texas) with 10 each.
“We’ve got a good young group,” said head coach Jeff Soderquist. “Our point of emphasis coming into this season was to improve our perimeter shooting, and I think we’re going to be a good shooting team this year.”
Kayla Chambers paced EC (1-4) with 16 points and 10 boards.
As a team, JBU shot 43 percent (33-76) from the floor including 31 percent (10-32) from beyond the arc.
EC only hit 30 percent (16-53) of their shots while turning the ball over 24 times.
JBU also won the battle on the boards 53-39.
