CONWAY, Ark. -- It took a trio of tiebreakers, but finally the John Brown University men's tennis team captured its first win of the spring 2017 season by landing deciding-set wins at first, second and third singles to grab a convincing 7-2 win over Central Christian (Kan.) on Friday (March 3) afternoon at the T.H. Vaughn Tennis Center.

Sophomore Nathan Kuykendall and junior Fernando Hurley remained undefeated at the top doubles slot (4-0) with an 8-5 win over Carlos and Andres Padilla before the Tigers (0-2) took a 2-1 lead by grabbing wins at the bottom two doubles spots.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Golden Eagles (1-2) swept all six singles positions to end the hopes of Central Christian.

Kuykendall, junior Kumhal Fulghem, sophomore Axel Betancourt and freshman Stone Swieter and Jordan Scoggins each picked up their first wins of the spring. Kuykendall, Hurley and Fulghem each needed a tiebreak to pull off the wins, including Hurley who made a 6-3 comeback after dropping the first set 3-6, only to take the final 10-5.

JBU returns to action on Saturday (March 4) to complete the three-match weekend with matchups against host Southwestern (Kan.) and NCAA II Oklahoma Baptist at 8 a.m. and noon, respectively.
