Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 19, 2005) - The John Brown Golden Eagles won two games this weekend in the Golden Eagle Invitational to push their season record to 4-1. John Brown defeated Central Baptist College (Ark.) 63-42 Friday night and Philander Smith College (Ark.) 68-34 on Saturday.
Against Central Baptist, Kendra McCormick led John Brown with 17 points. Alicia Baer scored 14 and contributed 4 assists, and Ashley Wettengel added 10 points. Jordyn West brought down 8 rebounds to go along with 6 points. The Golden Eagles forced 20 Mustang turnovers and scored 28 points as a result, but John Brown took its time in gaining full control of the contest. The Golden Eagles did not take the lead for good until McCormick made two free throws to give them a 16-15 lead with 6:31 remaining in the first half. John Brown’s defense held Central Baptist scoreless for the final seven minutes of the first half and forced another four-minute Mustang drought in the second half. Central Baptist’s Chenell Tucker fell just short of a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
The story was different against Philander Smith as John Brown led the entire game, building as large as a 38-point lead before doubling the Panthers’ total in the final score. Philander Smith scored one field goal in the first six minutes of action and trailed John Brown 34-21 at halftime. In the second half, the Golden Eagles allowed just four points in a 14-minute span. Overall, Philander Smith shot just 28% from the field, while John Brown shot 49% and made 86% of its free throw attempts. The Golden Eagles scored 30 points off 21 Panther turnovers.
Wettengel led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, shooting 83% from the field for the weekend. McCormick and Lesli Fanning each scored 10 points, and Alicia Baer added 6 assists and 4 points. Alisha Fingers led Philander Smith with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
John Brown (4-1) travels to Hendrix (Ark.) Tuesday for a 7:00 contest.
