JBU Women Upend Northwestern Oklahoma State

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 14, 2004) - Coming back from a loss on Thursday night, the John Brown University women’s basketball team took a decisive victory from Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon in Alva by a score of 62-43. The Golden Eagles took an early lead and never looked back as they raced to a 35-23 halftime lead and then outscored the Rangers 27-20 in the last period for the win. With four minutes remaining in the second half, the Golden Eagles led by 25 points at 62-37.

Lesli Fanning, with 5 three-pointers for 15 points led the way for JBU and Bethany Sites bucketed 4 treys for 12 points. Ashley Wettengel pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the team in rebounding.

“We played very sluggish today and it is a good thing that we were not playing one of the better teams in the league,” said Coach Jeff Soderquist following the game. “Although I am glad to get the victory (Soderquist’s 100 career win), we must get back to playing with more intensity to finish out the conference season. It was good to see our three-point shooting get back on track.”

JBU is now 20-7 for the season and 9-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference action. The Golden Eagles return home for two games next week. On Thursday evening at 6:00 pm, JBU will take on Southern Nazarene, currently the No. 1 ranked team in the NAIA. Then on Saturday, Oklahoma Christian University comes to Siloam Springs for another 6:00 pm game.
