Hannibal-LaGrange Sneaks Past John Brown, 53-50


HANNIBAL, Mo. (December 7, 2012) - Despite receiving 16 points from junior guard Sierra Shipley, the Golden Eagles were unable to take the lead on a last-second basket and ultimately fell to Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) tonight by a final score of 53-50.

The loss moves John Brown's record to 4-7 on the season. Although the Golden Eagles have fallen in three of its last four games, its margin of defeat has totaled only seven points combined.

The Trojans heavily out-rebounded JBU, capturing the battle of the boards by a 36-25 margin and placed the Golden Eagles in a deep hole during the first half, limiting John Brown to just 25 percent shooting (7-of-28). Although the poor first frame placed the visitors into a 27-19 hole, John Brown rebounded to shoot 42.3 percent in the second half.

Down by 11 points with 16:35 remaining in the second half, the Golden Eagles finally made its run, piecing together a 13-0 streak that handed JBU its first lead of the game with just over 12 minutes left.

As the teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the contest, HLGU used clutch free throw shooting to finally put John Brown away in the waning moments.

The Trojans were awarded 20 free throw attempts, making 12, while the Golden Eagles knocked down six of its seven attempts in the game. Six of freshman forward Brooke Barker's points game from a perfect 6-of-6 night at the charity stripe.

Senior guard Anna Parrish chipped in with 9 points, knocking down three triples on four chances.

In addition to her team-high 16 points, Shipley also paced John Brown on the glass, notching six rebounds. Barker posted three offensive rebounds, a team-high.

Hannibal-LaGrange moves to 6-4 on the season. The Trojans were led by Ashleigh Spencer's 22 points while Ashley Wilson turned in a double-double performance, grabbing 11 rebounds to accompany her 12 points.

The Golden Eagles will finish its semester and two-game road trip tomorrow night in St. Louis when it takes on Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) in a matinee matchup. The Hornets enter the game with a 3-7 record. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
