Host Kansas Wesleyan Knocks Off John Brown, 69-64

SALINA, Kan. (November 9, 2012) - Kansas Wesleyan forced eight steals and 19 turnovers as the Coyotes handed the Golden Eagles a 69-64 defeat in the first afternoon of the Oz Classic in Salina.

Freshman Brooke Barker turned in her breakout perfomance, pacing JBU with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Barker also drained two triples coming off the bench.

Junior guard Sierra Shipley chipped in with 14 points, fueled by 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles held an early 11-9 advantage when Lauren Rogers' field goal in the paint gave JBU a slim lead.

John Brown would then receive a triple from Barker, notching the lead to three (14-11) until KWU netted the next four points to take the lead.

JBU would then play from behind the rest of the afternoon.

A Coyote three-pointer at the first half buzzer ballooned the lead to 13, Kansas Wesleyan's largest of the game (43-30). KWU shot 47.2 percent in the first half while the Golden Eagles kept close pace, shooting at a 44.4 percent clip.

Up 10 with 6:31 remaining in the game, John Brown made a late 9-1 run, closing the home team's lead to two. A field goal from Barker, a Shipley triple and a pair of free throws from Anna Parrish keyed the streak.

Morgan Ankrom's field goal with 2:01 remaining again closed the gap to two, but the Coyotes would finish on a 5-2 run, handing JBU the final 69-64 defeat.

Ankrom and Parrish each finished with eight points while Parrish's five assists proved to be a team-high. The two also teamed up to pace the Golden Eagle rebounding effort, finishing with six apiece.

With the loss, JBU falls to 1-2 on the young season and will look to regroup against Hasting (Neb.) in the Oz Classic finale tomorrow. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
