Golden Eagle Women pick up 6th SAC Win

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 31, 2004) - With a 71-68 victory over Oklahoma Christian University on Saturday night in Edmond, Oklahoma, JBU now has 6 Sooner Athletic Conference wins in the first half of the conference season. In a close game that saw 5 lead changes before JBU finally took the lead for good with 18:39 remaining in the game, a three-point shot by OCU’s Katie Fariss at the buzzer ringed the rim three times before popping out to preserve the win for JBU.

The Golden Eagles trailed at the half 38-36 before taking control in the second period and opening the margin to as many as 10 points midway through the last half. Bethany Sites, with 10 points, kept the score close in the first half, but it was Alicia Baer and Kendra McCormick with 8 points each in the second half that allowed the Golden Eagles to take and hold the margin of victory.

McCormick led JBU with 15 points as Baer and Sites each added 14 to the winning effort. Ashley Wettengel pulled down 9 rebounds, 8 on the defensive end, to top the Golden Eagles in caroms. Wettengel also scored 8 points, as did Natalie Reid who hit some key baskets when the momentum seemed to be shifting in favor of OCU.

“Our 6 wins in the first half of the conference season is the most we have had at this point and I am proud of the way our team has handled themselves thus far,” commented JBU Coach Jeff Soderquist. “We still have a long way to go and we continue to have the goal of earning a good seed in the SAC tournament and then making the national tournament in March.”

JBU improves to 17-5 for the season and 6-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. At 6-3 in the SAC, the Golden Eagles are tied for 3rd with Wayland Baptist University. JBU will face conference foe, Oklahoma Baptist University on Monday evening in Murray Sells Athletic Center on the JBU campus. Game time is 7:30 pm. JBU defeated OBU 63-57 on January 3 to begin the conference season. Then on Thursday night, the Golden Eagles will travel to Oklahoma City to face the No. 2 team in the country, Oklahoma City University at 6:00 pm.
