Golden Eagle Offense Dominates in 6-0 Victory Over St. Gregory's

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (October 17, 2012) - Karen Sosa and Cheyenne Padgett each netted a pair of goals as freshman keeper Kristen Morency posted a shutout in John Brown's 6-0 victory over St. Gregory's (Okla.) today at Alumni Field.

The game marked Morency's fourth consecutive shutout and her seventh overall in 2012.

"We sprinted out of the gate today," said head coach Scott Marksberry. "We did a great job of connecting passes, moving off of the ball and creating chances at the start of the game. We wanted to put away a couple of goals in the opening 20 minutes and it was nice to be able to do so."

"I thought (St. Gregory's) played hard through the entire game today, and that the program is headed in the right direction under their new coach."

It didn't take long for the Golden Eagle (8-3-1, 3-3-1 SAC) offense to strike as JBU scored three goals in a four-minute span, opening a 3-0 spread off the bat.

Whitney Brannan opened the scoring while Padgett and Sosa added their first goals all before the 19th minute of play.

Brannan's sixth goal of the season proved to be the game-winner in the 14th minute.

John Brown outshot the visiting Cavaliers (0-13-1, 0-5-0 SAC) 9-2 in the first half. The defense played steady, not allowing a shot that forced Morency to make a save.

The second half was much of the same as JBU held another seven-shot advantage over SGU, this time by a margin of 11-4.

Padgett and Sosa scored their second goals of the game, lifting John Brown to a 5-0 advantage. Sosa buried a juicy rebound that originated off a difficult shot from Alex Fahr.

Fahr would later find the scoresheet again five minutes later, this time finishing the goal of the afternoon as the freshman striker bent in a floating ball of the far post, launching the shot just outside the 16-yard box.

Morency collected two saves in the clean sheet effort. The netminder was rarely tested throughout the match.

"Karen (Sosa) had a really good game today," added Marksberry. "She was active in the attacking third, connected some simple passes and scored two nice goals. Cheyenne (Padgett) scored a couple of nice goals as well.

"Our back line broke up plays and did a great job keeping the opposition off of the scoreboard. We have posted eight shutouts in our last 10 games. Once our new players began to settle into our system of play, we have defended well as a team."

The Golden Eagles have just 48 hours to rest as JBU will travel to Rogers State (Okla.) for a 6:00 p.m. battle on Friday (Oct. 19).
