John Brown University Gets 2nd Victory in Classic

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 15, 2003) - Playing their second game in as many days in the John Brown University Women’s Basketball Classic, the Golden Eagles capitalized on the mistakes of Bethel College and came away with a runaway victory over the Threshers 75-33. A 9-0 run early in the first half pushed the score to 13-6 helping JBU take a 38-19 lead into the locker room at half. Then in the second half, the Golden Eagle defense did not allow the Threshers a field goal in the last 15 minutes of play while continuing to extend their lead to the final margin of 42 points.

Two players scored in double figures for the winning Golden Eagles with freshman Ashley Wettengel pumping in 14 points followed closely by sophomore Lesli Fanning with 13.

“The bench made major contributions in last night’s second half and in all of today’s game and that made the difference in our overall play. Our defense kept the pressure on all afternoon and that hurt Bethel’s offensive attack. Our younger players are beginning to show more confidence in their play. These two back-to-back wins were good momentum builders for the remainder of the non-conference season,” Coach Jeff Soderquist commented following the win.

JBU extends their season record to 4-1 and will play again on Tuesday evening against Rhema College at 6:00 pm in Siloam Springs.

College of the Ozarks opened the second day of the Classic with a 24-point win over LSU-Shreveport 77-53. Cara Painter and Katie Howard led the C of O Bobcats with 18 and 16 points respectively. For the Pilots of LSU-Shreveport, Renalda Stafford tossed in 19 to lead her team in scoring.
