Penalty Kicks Abound in JBU's 1-1 Draw with City
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (October 6, 2015) -- Freshman Aspen Robinson wasn’t able to convert a penalty kick with 24 seconds left, and the John Brown women’s soccer team (6-4-1, 2-0-1 SAC) had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Oklahoma City after 110 minutes on Tuesday (Oct. 6) evening at Stars Field.
With a pair of penalty kicks already called in the contest, Robinson had an opportunity to hand the Golden Eagles just its fourth all-time win over City (5-3-1, 1-0-1 SAC), but pushed the would-be game-winner just wide of the target. JBU out-shot the hosts 4-2 in the two overtime sessions but was unable to score in the squad’s first draw of the season.
Ailee Thompson broke open the scoring for the Stars in the 49th minute when her penalty kick opportunity found the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead. It was her seventh goal of the season.
John Brown responded in the 70th minute, however, when freshman Jastin Redman notched her team-leading ninth goal of the year when she converted her penalty kick chance to tie the score.
Junior keeper Hannah Poor (6-4-1) collected four saves in the draw, including a timely save on OCU’s Allison Worsham in the first extra session. Kirsten Thomas (4-3-1) made just two saves for the Stars.
In a wildly offensive affair, both teams launched 17 shots as Robinson recorded a game-high six while Redman sent four towards the City net. Sophomores Samantha Weber and Sara Frey each added a pair of attempts for the Golden Eagles. Thompson and Worsham led the Stars with four attempts apiece, including two each on target.
John Brown will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 10) when it takes on Science & Arts (Okla.) at 5:30 p.m. in Chickasha.
