JBU Business Students Sweep Tri-State Governor’s Cup

Siloam Springs, Arkansas (May 26, 2011) - The John Brown University business teams swept the undergraduate division at the 2011 Tri-State Donald W. Reynolds Cup Business Plan Competition held this week in Las Vegas, Nev. The Craftistas took the top spot while Agricultural Food Systems took second place. JBU student Kirk Dennison from Agricultural Food Systems also won the Elevator Pitch Award for his ability to successfully sell the product to a potential investor in 90 seconds. JBU teams were awarded a total of $41,000 in cash prizes.

For the competition, each team is required to complete a business plan that includes a mission, vision, strategy, marketing, financials and investment opportunities for the first five years of business. Judges examined the plans and watched team presentations before selecting the winners. 

“It has been such an honor and pleasure to work with such a Godly group of talented young people who are willing to work so hard to achieve their goals,” said Mike Kennelley, JBU associate professor of business and team advisor. “We have been blessed to have them attend JBU.”

“Our students are the cream of the crop,” said John McCullough, JBU business division chair. “We enjoy placing our students in competitive positions with other schools, both large and small. The Tri-State Governor’s Cup competition has once again given us the opportunity to brag on the quality of our students and the JBU business programs.”

The University of Oklahoma, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the University of Nevada-Reno also competed, making JBU the only private university in the undergraduate division.

Last month in Little Rock, JBU teams swept the undergraduate division at the Reynolds Governor’s Cup statewide business plan competition winning first, second and third place. JBU teams also won third place in the graduate division, the Innovation Award, the Agricultural Award and the undergraduate Elevator Pitch Award. Their success at the state level made them eligible to compete at the tri-state competition.
