Siloam Springs, Arkansas (May 26, 2011) - John Brown University and the Willard and Pat Walker Charitable Foundation announced this week the Foundation has given the University $500,000 to endow scholarships for Biblical Studies division majors.

“The Walker Foundation has generously supported JBU for many years, and this new gift continues and expands our wonderful partnership to educate students to honor God and serve others,” said Dr. Chip Pollard, JBU president. “We are deeply grateful to Pat Walker and the Walker Foundation board for this great blessing.”

The Walker Foundation gift will be matched with $500,000 from the $20 Million Challenge, part of JBU’s Keeping Faith campaign, to increase the existing Walker Foundation Endowed Scholarship for Biblical Studies to $2 million. This endowment will now provide significant scholarships to at least 40 students each year.

The Walker Foundation Endowed Scholarship for Biblical Studies was established in 2006 with a $500,000 gift that was matched as part of the $10 Million Challenge, also part of the Keeping Faith Campaign. The designated funds go to students working toward a degree in the Biblical Studies Division. This includes students who are studying Biblical and Theological Studies, Cross-Cultural Services, Children and Family Ministries, Outdoor Leadership Ministries, Youth Ministries and Family and Human Services.

“On behalf of the students in the Biblical Studies Division who will receive these scholarships, I want to express my gratitude to the Walker Foundation,” said Dr. David Brisben, chair of the Division of Biblical Studies. “These scholarships will benefit young people who, after graduating, will go on to become youth ministers, family counselors, children’s advocacy workers, adoption caseworkers, pastors, chaplains and international relief workers.”

“We are grateful for this generous gift and the long-standing support from our friends at the Walker Foundation,” said Jim Krall, vice president for university advancement.

The $20 Million Challenge was created by an anonymous donor to encourage alumni and friends of JBU to give funds for endowed scholarships and program endowment. The anonymous donor has pledged up to $10 million in matching funds for the challenge.
