JBU Speech and Debate Takes 2nd at Debate Championship

Siloam Springs, Ark (February 27, 2003) - The JBU Speech and Debate team placed 2nd overall in the Fulbright Debate Championships held on the campus of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Feb. 21-23. Eleven schools from five states competed in the regional competition.

Leading the team in individual debate competition was sophomore Daniel West, with a 4-2 record advancing to semi-finals in the Novice category. Coach Jason Hough, Assistant coach Josh Bentley, and sophomore Felicia Parmain also scored wins for the team, but did not advance. Coach Hough placed 1st out of 48 contestants in the all-around speaker category.

Leading the team in partner debate competition were sophomores Jenny Jackson and Liz Dodson with a 4-2 record advancing to quarterfinals in the Novice category.

“I was very proud of Jackson and Dodson,” said assistant coach Bentley. “Even though they are classified as Novice, the entire tournament was open, which means they beat out more experienced teams.”

The teams of junior Seth Wright and sophomore Evan Butron, and sophomore Devi Abraham and freshman Vinny Moor both advanced to octo-finals with 3-3 records in Novice. The new team of sophomores Cole Truitt and Felicia Parmain also scored wins for the team, but did not advance. The most experienced team, seniors Kassandra Bohlender and Jena Richmond had to withdraw from the tournament Friday evening because Richmond was ill.

“Even though she was sick, she went to the first round, anyway,” said Hough. “She and Bohlender won that round, and Richmond took top speaker for the round.”

The team, health and weather permitting, will travel to the Novice Speech and Debate Championships this weekend at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. Their competition season will conclude with the Christian Forensics Nationals at Point Loma Nazarene University March 14-16.

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
