National Marriage Week USA Comes to Northwest Arkansas

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 8, 2010) - Northwest Arkansas Healthy Marriages, a community service of the Center for Relationship Enrichment (CRE), along with hundreds of organizations across the country, are partnering together for National Marriage Week USA. The initiative will taking place Feb. 7 to 14, the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

On Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, Bentonville Mayor Bob McCaslin proclaimed February 2010 as Healthy Marriage Month in the city of Bentonville. National Marriage Week USA hopes to elevate national attention on the need to strengthen marriage, initiate new efforts to reduce the divorce rate and build a stronger marriage culture, which in turn helps curtail poverty and benefits children.

“Arkansas has one of the highest divorce rates in the nation – second only behind Nevada,” said Dr. Greg Smalley, CRE director of church relationship ministries. “Even more alarming is that Northwest Arkansas has one of the highest divorce rates in the state. Marriage breakdown is costly to our kids and to society at large. In these challenging economic times, building stronger marriages helps build a stronger state and nation.”

Northwest Arkansas Healthy Marriages has already sold out its Valentine Ultimate Date Night featuring nationally renowned comedian couple Jim & Laura Laffoon. Northwest Arkansas Healthy Marriages has also partnered with local churches to plan special events for the week with the intention to foster ongoing initiatives. In addition, there is a list of specific ideas that individuals, couples, churches, and businesses can use to celebrate National Marriage Week at the NWA Healthy Marriages website:

The CRE is in the middle of a five-year, $2.7 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, to support research and development of healthy marriages in Northwest Arkansas. Northwest Arkansas Healthy Marriages is the program directing the marriage strengthening initiatives in NWA.
