Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 3, 2009) - Charles E. Peer, professor of art and design and director of the art gallery at John Brown University, was inducted into the Van Buren High School Hall of Honor Class of 2009. The tenth annual induction ceremony was held Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Van Buren, Arkansas high school.

“The past recipients, along with my fellow inductees, certainly represent the best of talented, intelligent and giving individuals,” said Peer. “It is a group of people whom I feel completely humbled to stand with. I was honored to have been selected for the Van Buren Hall of Honor, but I would like to give credit to my family and colleagues, for without them my accomplishments would be very few.”

Peer is a 1971 VBHS graduate whose talents in the fine arts have culminated in dual distinguished careers as an innovative professor of art at JBU and as an outstanding private artist whose works are included in many public and private collections. His pastel paintings have garnered many awards including the Kitty Wallis Award at the Northeast National Pastel Exhibition at the Arts Center of Old Forge, New York and an invitation to be included in the upcoming book, “Best of American Pastel Artists, Volume II,” by Kennedy Publishers.

Peer achieved his Bachelor of Arts at Hendrix College and his Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing at the University of Arkansas in 1979. After earning his MFA, he opened his own studio in Van Buren. In 1990, he moved to Siloam Springs to begin teaching in the Department of Visual Arts at JBU.

“My work is not about the replication of our environment, but rather an interpretation of the colors and movement found in the everyday landscapes. Often the magnificent color and light inspirations of familiar places are missed because we are looking for the grand and majestic scenes. This attempt to find color inspirations in everyday places is my attempt at making familiar things new.”
