Press Release Photo

Siloam Springs, Ark (November 26, 2002) - The John Brown University opera workshop will present the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors Dec. 6-7 at 8 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Ozarks on the JBU campus.

Amahl and the Night Visitors was written in 1951 for television by Gian-Carlo Menotti. Set at the time of Christ's birth, it is the story of a crippled boy and his mother who are surprised one night by travelers asking for lodging. The events of that one night have a profound and lasting influence on both Amahl and his mother.

The role of Amahl will by sung on Friday, Dec. 6 by 11-year-old Paul Abbey of Siloam Springs and on Saturday, Dec. 7 by JBU freshman Liesl Mindeman. Senior Jen Caba is Amahl's mother, and seniors Nate DePoint and Matt Haney and sophomore Travis Florquist are the three mysterious visitors. Students of the JBU opera workshop fill the remaining roles. This performance will mark only the second time in 28 years that JBU has presented this work with orchestra in the Cathedral of the Ozarks.

This short opera is a wonderful way to begin the celebration of the Christmas season. The beautiful music and engaging story will make this an enjoyable production for people of all ages. Siloam Springs residents attending the “Light Up Siloam Springs” Christmas parade on Saturday are encouraged to “come as you are” and finish a special evening of Christmas celebration with this delightful 50-minute presentation.

Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors (60 and up) and $3 for children (12 and under). For ticket information, call the JBU music department at (479) 524-7382. John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries.
