Women overcome sluggish start

Ashley Taylor led JBU with 23 points and six boards in a 65-53 win over St. Gregory

Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 26, 2009) - Although the JBU women didn’t dash out of the gates on Thursday night in Murray Sells, they still managed to put together a 65-53 win against St. Gregory’s (Okla.) in Sooner Athletic Conference action. The win moves JBU to 14-15 overall and 8-13 in conference.

Ashley Taylor paced the Golden Eagles with 23 points and six rebounds while Claire Harrison added 12 buckets and four caroms.

Jalisa Howard finished with 17 points and seven boards for SGU (1-26, 0-21)

After a rough start in the first half, the women found themselves behind 4-10 at the 14:50 mark. Things continued to go St. Gregory’s way as the Lady Cavaliers went ahead by 14, 25-11, after a Sunni Hill bucket with 5:33 left.

JBU wouldn’t be rattled, however, and responded with a 7-2 run to cut it to single digits, 18-27, with 2:50 remaining. Hill scored again for SGU to give them an 11 point lead, but Harrison scored five points along with a bucket from Taylor and free-throw from Chelsea Garrison helping JBU pull within three, 26-29, before the half.

The second stanza was all JBU as the women took a 40-39 lead after an Emily Ortiz three with 13:17 remaining in the contest. JBU continued to build on this lead and led by 16, 58-42, with 5:23 remaining after several players scored easy buckets in transition. SGU was unable to construct a final run as the Golden Eagles walked away with the 12 point win.

On the night, JBU shot 52.1% (25-48) from the including 32% (7-22) from the perimeter. JBU also dominated the boards 40-27. For SGU, they finished the night shooting 33% (19-57) overall and struggled from the arc only hitting 24% (5-21).

Up next, JBU closes out the regular season on the road against No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Shawnee.
