Men Upended at Home

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 8, 2009) - The John Brown University men’s basketeball team fell 55-75 to No. 18 Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday night in Murray Sells.

Senior guard Jarrett McGriff (San Antonio) led the Golden Eagles (10-5, 3-4) with 12 points and three boards. Sophomore Andrius Mikutis (Silale, Lithuania) added nine. Leading scorer Davaughn Jackson (Nassau, Bahamas) was held to five points and five boards after fouling out midway through the second half.

Nate Brumfeld tallied 17 points and six boards to lead the Bison (12-2, 5-1). Brent Jones added 15.

JBU fell behind by as many as ten in the first half, but used a late surge to pull within two, 34-36, before the intermission.

Early in the second stanza, McGriff put JBU ahead by two, 38-36, after converting from the charity stripe. But OBU came storming back behind the play of Brumsfeld who went ahead to score nine consecutive points to put the Bison ahead by five, 47-42, with 13:44 left in the game.

At the 8:31 mark, Jones gave OBU the thirteen point 58-45 lead, but JBU’s senior guard Cody Page (Keller, Texas) quickly answered on the other end with a deep three to cut it back to ten.

Page’s three at the 8:04 mark would be JBU’s last field goal until the final minute of the game, with the rest of the points coming from the foul line and a McGriff three with :42 seconds left.

For the game, JBU went 18-of-42 (42.9 percent) including 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from long distance. The Golden Eagles grabbed 23 rebounds while committing 21 turnovers to only nine assists.

For OBU, they shot 26-of-51 (51 percent) while struggling from long distance only going 3-of-15 (20 percent). OBU only committed 11 turnovers and was able to score 27 points off the 21 JBU turnovers. OBU also scored 32 points in the paint to six from JBU.

JBU returns to play on Saturday when they travel to St. Gregory’s (Okla.) in Shawnee. The women play at 6 p.m. and the men tip-off at 8 p.m.
