JBU Awarded Highest Honor for Fiscal Management

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 9, 2008) - John Brown University has been awarded the coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management in the nonprofit sector from Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates the efficiency of charitable organizations. JBU was given a 4-star rating for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances. It is estimated that approximately 25 percent of all charities evaluated by Charity Navigators will receive a 4-star rating. Of the five Arkansas charities with a 4-star rating, JBU is the only university to receive the top award. With a growing demand for financial accountability, Charity Navigator is providing the much needed evaluation of charities and the financial health people are looking for in a charity to donate money to. “I am thankful for the long history of financial strength at JBU,” said Jim Krall, vice president of university advancement. “The university places high priority on sound fiscal management and policies. We are very thankful for the alumni, friends, foundations and businesses that give to JBU, and seek to be good stewards of the resources they entrust to us.” In a time when the economy is struggling, JBU is continuing to receive donations that are allowing the university to expand. The addition to North Hall and renovations to the cafeteria were completed in time for the return of students for fall semester. JBU also recently celebrated the completion of the $6.2 million renovation project on the Cathedral of the Ozarks, the Art Building and the Engineering Building. Charity Navigator was founded in 2001 and has since become the nation’s largest evaluator of charities. Its rating system examines two areas of an organizations financial health—responsibility in functioning day to day as well as how well it positions itself to sustain its programs for years to come. Charities are given an overall rating, ranging from zero to four stars. Charity Navigator’s website (http://www.charitynavigator.org) provides donors with essential information that is needed to give greater confidence in the charitable decisions they make.
