Men Win Duel with Pioneers

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 4, 2008) - A big night from junior forward Davaughn Jackson (Nassau, Bahamas) helped JBU pull off a 65-60 win over conference opponent Wayland Baptist (Texas) at home on Thursday night. The win gives JBU its first conference win (1-1) and moves them to 8-2 overall.

Jackson went 8-of-15 from the floor including 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to finish with a game high 24 points, 15 rebounds, and three assists to lead the Golden Eagles. Andrius Mikutis (Silale, Lithuania) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Pioneers cut it down to two points, 32-30, before the break. Jackson scored 14 of his 24 in the first half.

“I thought Davaughn played really good tonight,” said head coach Clark Sheehy. “With the touches we gave him, he was very efficient. You can’t ask for anything better than that.”

In the second half, JBU pushed the lead to nine after Mikutis put back a Jackson miss to give JBU the 43-34 advantage. But with 4:40 left WBU (7-2, 0-2) tied things up after Tyrone Crawford capped off a 17-8 run by converting two free-throws to knot it up at 51.

At the 2:43 mark, the Pioneers missed their first opportunity to take the lead after Joao Terra missed the back side of the bonus free-throw attempt keeping things tied at 54.

With the game remaining tied at 56 with 1:07 remaining, JBU’s Jarrett McGriff (San Antonio) found Mikutis open beyond the arc, and he buried the trey to put the Golden Eagles ahead 59-56. JBU fouled on the next possession but WBU failed to convert the bonus free-throws and were forced to foul down the stretch.

On the night, JBU shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the field, including 70.8 percent (17-24) from the charity stripe. JBU took the rebounding edge 36-30.

As a team, WBU shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field. But they only managed to get to the line 10 times on the night converting 70 percent (7-10). Rene Farias led WBU with 18 points and Teddy Chambers added 12 points and six rebounds.

JBU returns to the floor against Lubbock Christian (Texas) at home on Saturday at 3 p.m.
