Women Enter Break with Win over Columbia

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 8, 2007) - The JBU women returned to Murray Sells Gymnasium on Saturday after a disappointing conference loss to Rogers State at home on Thursday night. But this time the women took care of business defeating Columbia (Mo.) 77-68. Ashley Taylor returned to her old ways leading the Lady Golden Eagles with a game high 17 points, six caroms, three steals, and one block.

JBU (6-5, 1-2) led by 16, 46-30 at the break and continued their hot shooting in the second half increasing their lead by as may as 21 at one point. But Columbia (4-7) sparked a comeback with 6:57 left in the game after Tammy Thomas drained a trey to bring the Cougars within 11, 56-67.

With 1:23 left, Columbia’s Megan Archuleta cut it to a five point game, 66-73. But JBU' s Taylor quickly answered back, pushing it to seven after Micaela Cully found her in the post for the easy layup.

JBU took care of the ball down and the stretch and that would be as close as Columbia would get on the evening.

JBU had four players including Taylor in double digits. Cully finished with 14 points and four assists. Staffica Bain pitched in with 13 and six boards. And Lenece Glossett picked up 11 points after nailing 3-4 from beyond the arc.

Thomas paced Columbia with 19 points. And Rachal Oswald added 18 and eight rebounds.

John Brown shot 47% for the evening, while Columbia managed to hit 44% of their tries. JBU, however, lost the rebounding battle 37-30 but made up for it by forcing 29 turnovers, while committing 23.

After seeing his team go up by 21, head coach Jeff Soderquist knew Columbia would make another run before the game was over with.

“I’ve been in coaching fifteen years and it’s a lot easier to come back than hold a lead at the college level,” said Soderquist. “It was good for our young team. I would have much rather won this way than win by twenty because this will help us in the future learn how to end games.”

This was JBU’s final game going into the Christmas break. The women are away from competition for the next four weeks but return to the floor on Jan. 3 against Lubbock Christian. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Murray Sells Gymnasium.
