JBU Netters Take Down Wayland Baptist

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 29, 2007) - It took John Brown five games to accomplish the task, but in the end the women’s volleyball team came back after being down 2-1 to defeat conference opponent Wayland Baptist (Texas) 3-2 on Saturday. In the opening game, Wayland would jump out to a 10-0 lead before John Brown would get on the scoreboard. But the Golden Eagles would remain focused and give a stalwart effort coming back to win 30-24. JBU would carry the momentum into game two where they would lose the lead late. Wayland Baptist would step up and make several key defensive stops and claim the game 30-27. The Golden Eagles would struggle in the third and give up an early lead to the Pioneers much like game one. And Wayland Baptist having experienced JBU’s resiliency in the first two games wouldn't let John Brown back in it and closed out the game 30-20. Both teams would exchange leads throughout game four, but JBU would take the 30-27 win. The fifth and final game would see JBU jump out to an 8-4 lead at the midway mark. John Brown would see the finish line at this point and finish out the match with the 15-9 win in the fifth. Several Golden Eagle players contributed in different categories. Junior Laurae Marty paced JBU with 18 kills while freshman Kirsten Lee followed close behind with 15. Setters Britney Kerns and Alyssa Hanson continued to share setter’s duties throughout the match and came away with 35 and 26 assists respectively. On the defensive end, Aubrey Junker picked up 26 digs and Shannon Proctor had 23. Sophomore Christi Newton also had a big day for JBU with seven blocks. John Brown (7-10, 2-1) looks to continue action when they travel to Bethany, Okla. to take on conference foe Southern Nazarene on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
