JBU Announces U.S. News Ranking

Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 17, 2007) - John Brown University’s academic excellence is once again displayed in its fourth place ranking among Baccalaureate Colleges in the South on the U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Colleges” list. JBU’s fourth place ranking amid 93 other schools in its category places JBU in the top 5 percent of southern baccalaureate colleges. "We are pleased when others recognize JBU's commitment to academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment, but we are even more proud of the achievements of our students and alumni as they excel in their chosen fields of service and in their commitment to others. They demonstrate the true quality of a JBU education." Dr. Charles Pollard, university president said. Keeping with the recently revised category standards established by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the 2008 edition of the U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Colleges” has changed JBU’s category name from Comprehensive Colleges-Bachelor’s to Baccalaureate Colleges. Essential criteria for the category, however, have not changed. In the past six years JBU’s ranking has continued to climb. JBU ranked twelfth in the Southern Region of the Comprehensive Colleges-Bachelor’s category in 2001 and 2002, eleventh in 2003, eighth in 2004, and sixth in 2005 and 2006. The total score that each institution receives is based on these criteria: peer assessment (25 percent), graduation and retention (25 percent), faculty resources (20 percent), student selectivity (15 percent), financial resources (10 percent), and alumni giving rate (5 percent). The rankings provide prospective students a comparison of schools based on these various pieces of data. “This endorsement once again confirms the quality education we provide.” Mr. Don Crandall, vice president of enrollment said. “Parents of prospective students continue to look at third-party endorsements when researching college options for their children. We are pleased that the strengths and academic quality of JBU are recognized by a third-party.” For the second year in a row JBU enrollment will reach more than 2,000 students. This week JBU will welcome the largest incoming class in its history with an estimated 425 students. John Brown University is a private Christian university, ranked fourth by U.S. News & World Report in the Southern Region. JBU enrolls more than 2,000 students from 40 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
