Comic Book Collection Comes to Art Gallery

Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 18, 2006) - Do you remember spending days reading “Classics Illustrated?” These comics (originally known as “Classic Comics”) were full of adventures with characters like Davy Crockett, Robin Hood, or the Three Musketeers? From 1940s to the 1970s these comics introduced GIs, bobby-soxers, and their baby-boom children to “Stories by the World’s Greatest Authors,” which encompassed Homer’s “Odyssey” and Frank Buck’s “Bring ‘Em Back Alive,” Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and H. G. Wells’ “The Invisible Man.” An amazing collection of these comics owned by Rick Parker and will be on display in the JBU Art Gallery, Friday, Oct. 27 through Sunday, Nov. 19. The public is welcome to attend a free opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. in the lobby of the Art building. At 7:30 p.m. William Jones, Jr., author of “Classics Illustrated: A Cultural History, with Illustrations,” will speak on the art and artists who made the comic book series so enormously successful. The exhibit will include such titles as “Treasure Island,” “Count of Monte Cristo,” “Moby Dick,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Wuthering Heights,” and “Black Beauty.” In addition to the exhibit, a presentation of personal essays inspired by these classic works of literature will be read by members of JBU’s faculty and administration will take place on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery. The essays will reflect on childhood experiences with “Classics Illustrated” comics. JBU’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, and JBU’s chapter of Alpha Chi, a national undergraduate honor society, will host the reading. The Art Gallery is located in JBU’s Art building on the main campus in Siloam Springs. Normal art gallery hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
