JBU’s Art Exhibit Opens Thursday Evening

Siloam Springs, Ark. (August 14, 2006) - John Brown University’s art department is pleased to present Sandra Bowden's "IKONS & LOGOS: Exploring the Book" in the JBU Art Gallery, Friday, Aug. 25 through Friday, Sept. 22. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24 from 6:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the lobby of the art building. Bowden will be a guest of the art department on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and will speak about her work to art classes throughout the day.

The exhibit and opening reception are free and open to the public. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The exhibit includes collages and prints by Bowden. All works for the show are on paper and use mixed media. The works draw on texts from the Bible and other literary sources. Bowden has had a long career as an artist with a concentration in the history of language and its ability to allow communication across time and place.

This show features three veins of the artist’s recent work: a group of stunningly crafted collages, several acrylic works on paper that were inspired by ancient illuminations and her newest endeavor, an artist’s book.

“Over the centuries scribes and illuminators have preserved the written word with devotion, love and care,” Bowden commented. “Many artistic approaches were used to record and embellish important text in the Bible. Manuscripts were often elaborately decorated with painted elements and gilded surfaces. Their beauty inspired my art.”

“The Art of Sandra Bowden,” published by Square Halo Books (2006) can be viewed at the exhibition. It contains over 200 full-color images and seven scholarly essays on the artist’s work. Eight autographed copies of Bowden’s book are available through the art department.

Bowden is based in Chatham, Mass., and has worked in the field of art for over 40 years. Her work been displayed in the United States, Europe and Israel. Her art is in the collection of the Vatican Museum of Contemporary Religious Art in Rome, the Museum of Biblical Art in New York City, the Haifa Museum in Israel, and many private and corporate collections.
