City overcomes turnovers, downs Golden Eagles in SAC opener

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Despite committing 18 turnovers, No. 19 Oklahoma City shot 52.4 percent from the field and held the John Brown University women's basketball team to a 34.5 percent clip to take a 75-62 win inside Bill George Arena on Thursday (Dec. 1) evening.

The loss sends John Brown to 6-4 and 0-1 in conference play. The Stars won its sixth straight and improved its record to 7-1 and 1-0 in league action.

OCU boasted a pair of double-digit performances and four double-digit scorers, including a 47-23 rebounding advantage. Daniela Wallen led all players with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Daniela Galindo posted 14 points and 10 boards. Mariana Duran and Janae Haag added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

JBU is now 2-2 against teams ranked in the NAIA National Women's Basketball Preseason Top-25 Poll.

The hosts struggled all night from the floor save senior Kodee Powell, who knocked down 8-of-14 to pour in 20 points, including four triples. Preslea Reece shot 4-of-13 and posted 10 points while Baily Cameron contributed nine points.

The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent in the first quarter, building a 19-16 lead, but held a 10-point lead in the first quarter that evaporated down the stretch.

The struggles began in the second quarter for JBU, which shot just 25.5 percent as the visitors built a 36-28 lead in the break.

The Stars continued its shooting prowess into the second half and hung 27 points in the third quarter while the Golden Eagles continually battled through droughts by converting 8-of-18 behind the arc over the final two periods.

OCU's largest lead came in the third period when a 23-point margin materialized into John Brown's largest deficit of the season. City shot 57.8 percent from the field in the final three stanzas and converted 52 percent of its attempts inside the arc in the final 20 minutes of play.

JBU will return to action on Saturday (Dec. 3) when it travels for its first SAC road matchup at St. Gregory's (Okla.). First tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Shawnee.
