John Brown University SIFE Team Wins Regionals

Siloam Springs, Ark (April 24, 1999) - John Brown University’s Students In Free Enterprise team won the Regional Championship held on April 19, in Memphis, Tenn.

Fifteen college students on JBU’s 1999 SIFE team competed against 50 other SIFE teams from this region and made this the second consecutive year that JBU has taken top honors in its division.

"Winning Regionals was so rewarding," said Charlia Ferreira, JBU’s SIFE instructor. "I was so thrilled for students because I know the long hours and the hard work they put into their projects. It was nice to see all their hard work pay off."

The three categories the teams compete in are Finalist, Halt the Deficit and Success 2000 all of which are judged on creativity and innovative projects that effect the teaching principles of free enterprise.

JBU not only won its divisional championship but it also won $1000 in the Project 2000 category for its English as a Second Language project. The ESL program offers English classes to non-English speaking members of the Northwest Arkansas community in order to assist the economically disadvantaged and encourage them to participate in the free enterprise system.

Because Northwest Arkansas has seen a 106 percent increase in its Hispanic population over the last few years, this program not only meets a definite need but it has almost a 100 percent success rate in the community, helping many people find employment.

There were thirteen opportunities in the region to win a championship title that will allow teams to advance to the International SIFE Championship that will be held May 16 - 18, 1999, in Kansas City, Kansas.

At this year’s International Championship, JBU’s SIFE team is planning to improve on last year’s 10th place finish among 650 competing teams from around the country.

"It was a great achievement for us to win because we are all new [to SIFE], and we had never experienced competition of that sort," said senior Vanessa Almengor, JBU SIFE president. " Right now we are seeking guidance from professors on campus who know a lot about public speaking so we will do better at this year’s international competition."

The members of the SIFE team include Vanessa Almengor, Jose Aparicio, Rosie Donado, Ayeska Hall, Eric Henry, Juan Laugerud, Mika Mizuo, Jose Molina, Mirna Ordonez, Jeremiah Proctor, Amparo Quinonez, Jose Sandoval and Paul Smith.

Since 1919, John Brown University, an interdenominational, Christian university, has provided top-quality Christ-centered higher education. JBU embraces a three-fold emphasis on training the "Head, Heart and Hand" of 1,400 students from over 44 states and 38 countries.

For ten consecutive years, JBU has been on the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll of Character Building colleges. The University has also been repeatedly included in the U.S. News & World Report’s list of top regional colleges and universities.
