JBU Unloads Frustration on Central Baptist

Siloam Springs, Ark. (December 17, 2005) - The John Brown Golden Eagles shook the frustration of a five-game losing streak off onto Central Baptist College (Ark.) with a 96-71 victory Saturday in Siloam Springs. Brandon Cole scored 33 points, pulled down 9 rebounds, and contributed 5 assists, while Alex Terry scored 14 points. Joel Tesis earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Central Baptist opened the game aggressively, forcing turnovers and scoring on fast breaks to take an early 7-2 lead. Point guard Terry scored John Brown’s first six points, providing the team’s only offense until Oscar Sealy hit a jumper to cut Central Baptist’s lead to 9-8 with 16:51 left in the first half. John Williams then scored a basket for the Golden Eagles, giving them a 12-11 lead with 15:23 remaining. John Brown never surrendered that lead, building it as high as 29 twice behind 52.3% field-goal shooting.

The Mustangs initially kept the Golden Eagles’ outside shooters under control, preventing the first John Brown trey until the middle of the first period when Cody Page connected. The Golden Eagles finished the game 10-of-21 from behind the arc. Cole did not score for John Brown until the 10:57 mark in the first half, when the Golden Eagles led 21-15. He added 10 more points in the first half, and finished with 33 on 11-of-20 shooting. He connected on 5-of-9 three-point attempts.

Central Baptist, meanwhile, produced some impressive offensive performances of its own. Lamar Eslinger matched Cole’s total of 33 points, while Marcus White scored 19, and Robert Davis added 10. The Mustangs shot a respectable 40.6% from the field and an outstanding 87.5% from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles connected on 72% of their free throws, with Terry being a perfect 6-for-6.

John Brown won the rebounding battle, however, 45-28. While Tesis pulled down 10 boards and Cole grabbed 9, Central Baptist’s White led the Mustangs with just 4.

John Brown (4-6) hosts Oklahoma Wesleyan on Dec. 31. This coming week’s game against Faulkner (Ala.) in the Classic at Playa del Carmen in Mexico has been cancelled due to transportation problems in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma.
