JBU Loses Opener at Lyon

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 7, 2005) - John Brown’s Nancy Pierre made her first career start Monday night and nearly made the difference for the 19th-ranked Golden Eagles as they lost in overtime 58-55 at Lyon (Ark.). Pierre scored 19 points, including her team’s first 6 and the two free throws that forced overtime. Her potential game winning shot with fewer than ten seconds to play in overtime was blocked by Orma Fisher, and the Pipers escaped with the win.

The Golden Eagles were hampered by poor shooting throughout the game, but especially in the first half when they made just 26% of their shots. Pierre was the notable exception, shooting 7-for-9 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the game. John Brown failed to score for the first four minutes of the game until Pierre began to make her presence felt. John Brown’s Tara Stephenson, Alicia Baer, and Lesli Fanning all hit treys in the final ten minutes of the first half, but Lyon’s Crystal Bogy scored her team’s final seven points to give the Pipers a 27-19 halftime lead.

John Brown’s shooting improved dramatically in the second half to 39%, and the Golden Eagles took advantage of a five-minute Piper scoring drought in the final seven minutes of regulation. John Brown went on a 15-2 run during that stretch and climbed back in the game with baskets by Kendra McCormick and Ashley Wettengel, along with Pierre’s overtime-forcing free throws.

McCormick, with 12 points, was the only other Golden Eagle in double figures. Lyon was led by Bogy’s 13 and Lyndsey Rieck’s 11. Bogy also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.

John Brown (0-1) will compete in the College of the Ozarks Classic this weekend in Point Lookout, Mo. The Golden Eagles will play Concordia (Neb.) on Friday, and Tabor (Kan.) on Saturday.
