JBU Announces Tuition Costs for 2003-2004

Siloam Springs, Ark (February 14, 2003) - The John Brown University board of trustees has approved a 4.9% tuition increase for 2003-2004 academic year. This is the second-lowest tuition percentage increase in 16 years.

The board-approved 2003-2004 total cost includes a 5.7% room and board increase ($5,070/ year), a 10.34% fee increase ($640/ year), and a 4.9% tuition increase ($13,076/ year). The total tuition, fees, room and board cost for 2003-2004 is $18,786, which is a 5.29% increase from the 2002-2003 academic year.

“When compared to the average private Christian universities nationwide, JBU consistently offers our students a top-quality education at a very competitive tuition price,” said Dr. Lee Balzer. “We are thankful to be one of the few Christian universities that can offer our students more than $20 million in new facilities while keeping our tuition costs down. There’s no doubt that dollar for dollar, JBU is a great value.”

Of 81 member universities of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) nationwide, 60 universities are more expensive than JBU. JBU's tuition discount rate (the amount of tuition revenues JBU allocates to institutional financial aid) is 33% this year, which places JBU in the highest 1/3 of all CCCU schools. JBU's average loan indebtedness for traditional undergraduate students at graduation was $9,446, which ranked the very lowest of all 53 CCCU schools completing the survey. The average for all CCCU schools was $16,402.

“These three factors (lower quartile raking for both tuition/fees and student loan debt, and above average discount rate) make JBU one of the best values among national Christian colleges and universities,” said Don Crandall, JBU vice president for enrollment management. “We are pleased to be able to offer a top-quality education to our students at such a nationally competitive price.”

JBU was also listed in the 2002-2003 edition of America’s 100 Best College Buys, a report honoring universities that provide students with the highest quality education at the lowest cost. John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
