Pianist Myra Schubert will Perform at John Brown University

Siloam Springs, Ark (February 26, 2002) - The music department at John Brown University will present pianist Myra Schubert in concert as part of its ongoing Lyceum concert series. The piano recital will take place in the Jones Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. The event is free and open to the public.

Schubert will perform “Sonata in F Major” by Mozart and “Flight of the Bumble Bee” by Rimsky-Korsakoff. The highlight of Schubert’s concert will be seven songs she has arranged, including hymns, spirituals and a Swedish folk melody.

During her 30-year career, Schubert has conducted three world tours with the World Nazarene Church. She has performed both sacred and classical concerts in over 20 countries. In 1978 she was voted “Outstanding Alumnus” of Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla. In 1979 Schubert was one of three piano teachers in the United States to receive the National Artist Diploma from the National Guild of Piano Teachers. The award required her to play four hours of memorized repertoire for an adjudicator. Schubert is a member of the Hall of Fame with the American College of Musicians.

Schubert is an alumnus of Southern Nazarene University and received her master’s of music in piano performance from Oklahoma University, where her primary professor was Lytle Powell, a student of Tobias Matthay. Her postgraduate studies were conducted at Oklahoma City University with Dr. Clarence Burg, also a student of Matthay.

This Lyceum concert event is a Heartland Arts Fund program. The Heartland Arts Fund is a collaborative venture of Mid-America Arts Alliance, Arts Midwest, the Arkansas Arts Council with primary funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, and support from private contributors.

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of over 1,600 students from 45 states and 33 countries. JBU is a member of the Arkansas Independent Colleges and Universities as well as the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
