Golden Eagles Suffer One Point Loss on the Road

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 6, 2002) - The John Brown University men and women’s basketball teams both came up short on Thursday night in Edmond, Oklahoma, dropping a pair to Oklahoma Christian University.

The men’s team came up just one point shy 56-57 as Nathan Law’s 15 foot jump shot goes in and out at the buzzer. JBU battled back from a 13-point deficit early in the second half sparked by the play of their bench led by Abdiel Mendietta and Reyjavik De Gracia. The Golden Eagles held OC to only 7 points over the next 12 minutes and built a 7-point lead of their own with a little over 4 minutes to play. A couple of turnovers and two missed front ends at the free throw line gave OC a chance to tie the game with less than 20 seconds to play. Osric Woods missed a baseline jumper but Jacques Vandescure scored and was fouled on the put back to give Oklahoma Christian what proved to be the one point final advantage. JBU was lead by Mendietta and Aldo McKay with 11 points each. The Eagles were lead by Vandescure with 21 points and 8 rebounds. JBU drops to 11-4 and 1-2 in SAC play as No. 19 ranked OC moves to 12-1 and 2-1 in the conference.

“Road wins are hard to come by in this conference and we let one get away. Our kids, especially our bench, showed some character coming back but we didn’t play smart down the stretch. That and free throws cost us a win tonight,” commented coach John Sheehy following the game.

The Golden Eagles women also trailed by 7 points at the break, but couldn’t muster a second half run and fell to No. 14 ranked Oklahoma Christian Eagles 48-71. JBU struggled with turnovers throughout the game totaling 36 in the contest. JBU was lead by Katie Elliot with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Lara Keeling added 11 points. The Eagles were lead by Ali Griffin with a game high 26 points. JBU falls to 8-6 and 0-3 in SAC play while OC move to 12-4 and 3-0.

JBU looks to bounce back when they welcome new SAC member Northwestern Oklahoma State University to the friendly confines of Murray Sells Athletic Center this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. JBU then travels to highly ranked Oklahoma Baptist University on Monday to take on the Bison.
