Anonymous Donor Sponsors JBU Art Trip to Paris

Siloam Springs, Ark. (July 15, 2002) - Ten art students and two art professors from John Brown University recently returned from a 15-day art trip to Paris, France. The group spent two weeks in Paris studying the art of Claud Monet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Auguste Rodin and many others.

The trip was made possible by a grant from an anonymous donor. The grant covered the cost for the faculty sponsors and paid about $1,000 toward the cost of each student’s trip expenses.

“The focus of the art tour program is to expose JBU illustration and graphic design students to the full experience of seeing, feeling and understanding great art, architecture and design firsthand,” said Charles Peer, associate professor of art and design. “While there is merit to learning through exposure to slides, books, television, lectures and discussions, nothing can replace the impact of seeing something in person. No one understands what Gothic architecture and stain glass is like or feels its impact until he’s stood inside the Ste-Chapelle and seen it face to face.”

While in Paris, the students and faculty visited The Louvre, The Musée d Orsay, The Musée Rodin, The Picasso Museum, The Pompidou Center, L’ Orangerie, National Museum of Modern Art, Musée Marmottan, Giverny, Van Gogh’s home, Versailles, Chateau Chantilly. They also visited several famous churches and cathedrals, such as Notre Dame, Chartes, Ste-Chapelle, St. Pierre de Montmartre and Sacré Coeur. Other trip highlights included visits to the Deportation Memorial, Shakespeare Bookstore, Archeological Crypt, Eiffel Tower, Luxembourg Gardens, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysées and the Renault museum.

“We expect there to be many benefits to the students and to our entire program as they bring the inspirations of this trip into the classroom this fall,” said Dave Andrus, associate professor of art and design. “One of the many highlights was being able to visit Giverney, the home of Monet, where we toured his gardens and water lily ponds the day before we saw many of his paintings of these same scenes in the Museé d'Orsay in Paris.”

This international art trip was the first trip of its kind at JBU. The JBU art and design department is currently planning a similar trip next summer to London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland.

John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of over 1,600 students from 45 states and 33 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
